Introducing Petruchio and Lucentio:  Group Work on 1.1 and 1.2 of Taming

GROUPS WILL PRESENT THEIR RESPONSES TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EXCERPTS IN CLASS DISCUSSION ON 9/19.

(Two groups will look at 1.1; two groups will look at 1.2.  Click here for the texts.)

1.      Look at the opening lines said by Petruchio/Lucentio.  What do they tell you about him?

• Consider what character traits are revealed.

• How are these traits revealed?  Isolate specific lines in the text and explain.

2.      Look at Petruchio's/Lucentio's interactions with their servants.  How do they interact with each other?  Form an opinion about their relationships and be ready to defend you ideas with close reading from the text.

3.      What do we learn about the character of Grumio/Tranio (What is revealed about him?) and what is his function in this part of the scene?
