Point of View Guide:  Book 9 of The Odyssey

 Read The Odyssey, Book 9: In the One-Eyed Giant’s Cave from lines 1-262.  Then answer the following questions.  Keep in mind that these questions ask you to consider what you’ve read from different points of view.

 

Point of View:  Odysseus

Work to answer the following questions from the point of view of Odysseus.  Consider your opinions about Odysseus as a character and why he does what he does.  What would his character have to say in response to these questions?  Compose your answer in the 1st person point of view, as though Odysseus himself were responding.  Also use complete sentences and beware of comma splice!

1)      Odysseus, why did you go into the cave with your men and help yourselves to the inhabitant’s food?

 

 

 

2)      You say your main concern is to get home to the land you love.  Why then do you seem to spend so much time exploring and meeting new people?

 

 

 

 

Point of View:  Crew Member under Odysseus’ Command

Work to answer the following questions from the point of view of Odysseus’ crew members.  What would his character have to say in response to these questions?  Compose your answer in the 1st person point of view, as though the crew member himself were responding.  Also use complete sentences and beware of comma splice!

Point of View:  Polyphemus

In your group, work to answer the following questions from the point of view of Polyphemus.  What would his character have to say in response to these questions?  The writer in your group should compose your group's answer in the 1st person point of view, as though Polyphemus himself were responding.  Also use complete sentences and beware of comma splice!

6)      What was your opinion of Odysseus when you first talked with him?
