Mini-Research
Assignment #1—PART ONE
YOUR JOB TODAY: Find 3 biographical sources on EACH
of the two people you are researching. You MUST have this completed by
class tomorrow.
BRING THIS
SHEET AND WHAT YOU PRINT TODAY WITH YOU TO CLASS TOMORROW.
DO NOT PRINT
ANYTHING UNLESS YOU GET MS. SPACHMAN’S OK.
GETTING
STARTED Directions: (If you have Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz,
- Following Ms. Sherrill’s or Ms. Spachman’s
instructions, go to the “Favorites” menu in Internet Explorer. Click on
“Ms. Spachman’s Website.”
- When my website comes up, move your mouse under “IB
Survey Literature” until you see “Mini-Research Unit.” Click on that
link.
- On the Mini-Research page that comes up, there will
be a link for the Biography channel’s webpage. Click on that link.
- Once you get to biography.com, you can start
searching for information about the two people you need to find
information on. CAREFULLY follow the directions below to do your
research.
PERSON #1
Directions:
- Who are you researching first? Write his/her name
here (spell it correctly!):
_____________________________________________________________
- Start by finding him/her at biography.com. CAREFULLY
record the information asked for below:
- What is today’s date?
_______________________________
- What is the URL of Biography’s home page?
__________________________________________
- When you pull up the biography of your person, what
is the exact title of the page or article?
_______________________________________________________________________________
- Scroll down to the bottom of the article (not
the whole page). Is there an author’s name or a credit to who created the
article? If so, write the name(s) here: ____________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
- Also at the bottom of the article or the entire
page, look for a date of publication or a copyright date. Write that
date/year here: _________________________
- Read the article that comes up and answer the
following questions.
- Does biography.com have enough information for you
to understand who this person really was (i.e., enough information for
you to learn so you could tell someone else who this person was)?
Circle one: YES NO
- Do you understand the biography.com
article? YES NO
- No matter how you answered the last two questions,
relying ONLY on one source is NOT a good research practice. Therefore,
now you’re going to search for more biographical information using Google.
In the URL box, type “google.com.” Then, in the search box, type your
person’s name and hit enter.
- MANY different web pages will come up. Using the
information in each link and the description that appears underneath each
link, find two more web sites that have a substantial (more than a small
paragraph) amount of biographical information about your person. Choose
sites that you can understand. ONE of the web sites must be a reputable
source. What that means is that the web site is sponsored by or created
by someone or an organization with a good reputation and/or otherwise
appears to have reliable information. Follow the steps below.
- FOR A SITE YOU FIND THAT IS REPUTABLE:
- What is today’s date?

- Is there a name of an author or the web page
creator/designer listed? If so, write the name(s) here:
_______________________________________________________________________________
- Look for a date of publication or a copyright date.
If you find a date, write that date/year here: _________________________
- How do you know this site is reputable? List as
many reasons as you can to justify why you would rely on the information
this site provides to you on your person. ______________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
