The galaxy stretches before you...
On behalf of the Megadodo Publication Corporation of Ursa Minor, we would like to welcome you to your reading of that wholly-remarkable book: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

As you begin your journey, please check that you have the following:

~a towel
~your copy of the Guide
~30 Altarian dollars (or the equivalent in the form of currency you prefer)
~a completed copy of the "Anticipation Guide" for the book

[Note: For those of you formerly of the planet Earth, it might also give you some consolation to bring your digital watch although, as you will find while traveling in space, time is relative and your digital watch is nothing more than a glorified security blanket. Let's face it, Earth time and technology mean nothing whatsoever...]

Now sit back, turn on your "thumb," and let the wonders of the galaxy unfold for you amid our "pages."

(P.S. It is recommended that you reach the end of page 75 by Monday.)

(P.P.S. Also, all postings to this blog accrue extra credit, and while not as useful as Altarian dollars for traveling the galaxy, you might find this currency has some value on certain planets in certain classrooms. Postings are to be done at the poster's own risk for the management cannot assume responsibility for any damages; disappearances--temporary or otherwise; transformations--temporary or otherwise; technical difficulties; nor other highly probable or improbable occurrences that may occur during your reading, writing, or discussion of the Guide and its significance. Thank you and have a nice day.)

(P.P.P.S. Despite what our lawyers might say, just remember: DON'T PANIC.)

Hey fellow Earthlings....
I just wanted to express my thoughts thus far, on this interesting novel. There are times I just can't put this book down, it is so funny, I was reading it in the car and I was giggling at something I read, and my parents turned around and gave me this weird look, it was funny! Anyways, there are also some confusing parts, like going back and forth from that guy running for presidency or something and then to Ford and Arthur. I have had to read some parts like two-three times before understanding it, but overall, this book has been enjoyable (thus far, I'm like on page 87 or so...) Well, earthlings...enjoy this journey through outer space, and lets all hope that when in danger we too get saved by the probability space ship! Laterz!

I was sort of confused with this book during the weekend and didn't understand nor did I find anything funny about it. I especially didn't like the italics. Today I got a more clearer picture of this novel and sort of have a better understanding of it. Hey I even found it funny when I was listening to the tape version of the novel. I guess I need it read by someone or at least I need to hear various expressions of the characters in this novel. I guess that is what makes it a little more funnier for me. I also finally understood the bypass thing. Lijia explained to me that it's a bypass between Earth and another planet which sort of makes sense now. I guess I should be a little bit more focused on reading and try to understand what is trying to be said.

well....you wanna know what I think about this book? I think that it is lame. and it has nothing to do with my religious beliefs (i actually did not understand those satires!) The fact of the matter is that this book is pish posh (Towfiq's language here). I mean I don't like the scenarios and i dont like the whole space cadet thing...i can't relate to it. maybe my views will change later, but as of now i have concluded that i don't particularly find this book interesting. so...to all of u who may think i'm not being open-minded...please note that reading the book is doing an act of an open-minded individual. as a scholar, i must learn to read and observe that i may not want to. (Ms. Wallace would be proud!)

well i felt that it was time to deal with this idea of horrible poetry for the period. for those of you who dont know the vogon poerty begins on page 66. i felt the need to comment/analyse it.
The vogon says that he just writes poetry to throw my mean callous, heartless exterior into sharp relief. so really the humanoids weren't completely wrong. but what does this hideous mascarade mean? what message is being conveyed to the reader? well..upon analysis we realize that the vogon is addressing a gruntbuggy. whatever that may be. we also get a feeling that he is using a voice of authority. take the word "implore". he is giving teh gruntbuggy a task, something he wants him to complete. also the last line is almost threatening saying that the vogon will send the gruntbuggy into some sort of punishment, ending with "see if I don't". so we can see that this is a reflection of the vogon nature-- rough, threatening and of course commanding, so these are the elements we should try to include in our own poems.

Hey all!
Just wanted to make a quick comment on this book. I guess I am not the sci-fi girl. Sure, I did like to watch the X-Files back in the day, but this book is weird. I don't know, it's okay I guess. It's a pretty fast read. I do like the references to the time on Earth, like Godspell and McDonald's. I did, however get confused with the changes and transformations between earth and space. The characters are interesting. I wish there was more female characters, though. And no, Towfiq, I am not a hardcore feminist. Well, gotta go now, kids, so laterz all.

so you don't like the book, eh? i happen to like it, maybe because i am the sci-fi girl. i really like th efunny names and descriptions given to characters in the book. that zaphod beeblebrox character cracks me up. oh, and the "two to the power fifty thousand to one against and falling" was really funny. I want amillion-gallon vat of custard to fall on me! anyways, i really like the book and its mockery of the human race (and their digital watches). i'm feeling a lack of feminism in the book, too, but i'm used to it now.(after all of the female-deprived books we've read so far!)
