Calculating Your Grade

Your REPORT CARD grade depends on your 1st quarter grade (q1), 2nd quarter grade (q2), and final exam grade (x).  You can calculate out what you “need” to get on your final exam in order to get the report card grade you want by using the following steps.

 1st Quarter Grades--Period 4    Current 2nd Quarter Grades--Period 4

1st Quarter Grades--Period 6    Current 2nd Quarter Grades--Period 6

  1. Record your q1 and q2 grades here:

q1 ______%_              q2 _____%_

  1. Calculate the following formulas:

----      *          .45       =     ________________ (Q1)

----      *          .45       =     ________________ (Q2)

(Q1 + Q2)100 = _______________________ (S)

  1. Using the grading scale below, decide what grade you’d like to see on your report card.  We’ll call this y.

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 59 or lower

  1. Substitute in for variables y and S and solve for x.

y – S = x

  1. x is what you need to get on your final exam to get the grade you want on your report card*.  If you multiply x by 10, this tells you what percent you need to get right on the exam.  Therefore, if x = 7.7, then 7-7 * 10 = 77%.  You’d need a high C on the exam to get the grade you want.

* REMEMBER:  Your second quarter grade isn’t final yet.  It still may go up or down and that will impact “what you need” on your final exam to get the grade you want.
