Calculating Your
Grade
Your REPORT CARD grade depends on your 1^{st}
quarter grade (q1), 2^{nd} quarter grade (q2), and final exam grade
(x). You can calculate out what you “need” to get on your final exam in
order to get the report card grade you want by using the following steps.

 Record your q1 and q2 grades here:
q1 ______%_ q2
_____%_
 Calculate the following formulas:
q1
 *
.45 = ________________ (Q1)
100
q2
 *
.45 = ________________ (Q2)
100
(Q1 + Q2)100 =
_______________________ (S)
 Using the grading scale below, decide what grade
you’d like to see on your report card. We’ll call this y.
A = 90100

B =
8089
C =
7079
D =
6069
F =
59 or lower
 Substitute in for variables y and S and solve for x.
y – S = x
 x is what you need to get on your final exam to get
the grade you want on your report card*. If you multiply x by 10, this
tells you what percent you need to get right on the exam. Therefore, if x
= 7.7, then 77 * 10 = 77%. You’d need a high C on the exam to get the
grade you want.
*
REMEMBER: Your second quarter grade isn’t final yet. It still may
go up or down and that will impact “what you need” on your final exam to
get the grade you want.
