LENINA CROWNE’S STORYLINE

  1. In your small group, finish reading/skimming chapter 3 from page 47 to page 56.  WITH PENCIL, mark all the sections belonging to your group in your books.
  2. When you believe you’ve found all the sections belonging to your group (you might have a couple questionable ones), call over Ms. Spachman to check your work.
  3. Read all your sections together (starting from p. 34), in order, aloud so the whole group can follow the storyline.
  4. Once you’ve read your storyline all the way through, create 2-3 questions for your storyline.  These questions should not be “right there” questions (questions you can find the answer for right in the text; example:  What’s the Controller’s name?)  These questions should be questions you have about what happens and/or what is said in your storyline.  Write these questions and number them in the space below.

Mustapha Mond 1 Storyline Questions

1.      How is Mustapha Mond portrayed in this storyline?  Decide on 3 words that best describe his character.  Justify your choices by explaining evidence from the text.

 

2.      Re-read the Mustapha sections from page 36 to the first ½ of page 43.  What main point is Mustapha trying to make about the old family system humans adhered to before this society began?  Explain why you think this is his point.

 

3.      Mond spends a lot of time on page 36-43 talking about “home” and what that experience was like, repeating the phrase “my baby, my baby,” and more.  These are included to have two distinct effects.

  • First, what effect do you think Mond was trying to have on the group of students he is talking to in the chapter?  Justify your answer.
  • Second, since Huxley (the author) created Mond and his speech here and knew that people like us would be the audience, what effect do you think Huxley was trying to have on the readers?  Justify your answer.

 

4.      Go over to the computer and work together to do some research on Freud.  Who was he and when did he live?  What does he have in common with Henry Ford?  What are the Oedipal Complex and the Electra Complex?
