EXTRA CREDIT #2—Due Tuesday, May 20

Complete the steps below by Tuesday to earn up to 3 extra credit points.

1.  Imagine that x is the total minority enrollment at UC-Berkeley before Prop. 209 passed. Solve for x and show your work:   3x – 2121 = 26,139

2.  Using your calculation for x and the information given to you on the dark blue sheet (below), find the number of minority students UC-Berkeley lost in enrollment after Prop. 209 passed.  Show your work and explain how you calculated this number.

California's Proposition 209, an anti-affirmative action initiative, passed by a narrow margin in 1997.  After it passed, admissions of minority students dropped sharply.  At the University of California--Berkeley alone, overall admissions of black, Latino, and Native American students dropped by 50%.
