5th and 7th Period--Putting in Quoted Evidence, 5/22
Below are three sample about how to take the evidence from note cards and put
it into paragraphs. Always remember to do three things when using quoted evidence
in an essay:
- USE QUOTATION MARKS around the "word-for-word" evidence you took from
your research.
- Introduce your quote or otherwise make sure you've let your reader
know who is saying it (give your quote context).
- Put in a citation after your quote. Use the author's name if you
have it. If not, use the title of the article.
SAMPLE 1
Sample Paragraph:
Another reason why I think Prop. 187
is unjust is because it takes away the right of education. You might wonder,
“Is education really a right for an illegal immigrant?” The answer is
YES. According to Supreme
Justice Burger, “I would agree without hesitation that it is senseless for an
enlightened society to deprive any children—including illegal aliens—of an
elementary education” (Plyler v. Doe).

“Immigrants may be adding as much as $10
billion to the economy each year.”
or some of
you might have it written like:
“Immigrants may be adding as much as $10
billion to the economy each year,” said panel chair James P. Smith, senior
economist at RAND Corp., Santa Monica, Calif.

Sample Paragraph:
(notice the use of "" and '' because of the quote inside
the quote)
Second of all, I also think Prop. 187
is judging illegal immigrants unfairly because they actually add a lot of money
to our country. “ ‘Immigrants
may be adding as much as $10 billion to the economy each year,’ ” stated a top
economist, James P. Smith, who did research on immigrants (Galvin & Flannery).

Sample Paragraph:
Finally, I believe Prop. 187 causes
emotional harm. A
student named Myra from a school affected by Prop. 187 said, “American people,
they don’t want us here no more. They don’t like us” (“Fear and Learning at
Hoover Elementary”).
