8th Period--Moving from Outline to Paragraphs, 5/22

The good part about spending so much time on your outline is that if you have done it well, then writing the paragraphs for your argument will be a snap!  Look below at how I wrote my body paragraph from the outline we did together.  Each section of the outline is colored to match what I wrote in the paragraph.  See the similarities??

II.      Reason 1:  No “unfair judgment,” proof #1

A.  Transition and topic sentence:  First of all, illegal immigrants are in no way judged unfairly in Prop. 187.

B.  Context:  The law states that illegal immigrants are causing economic and physical harm to Californians by taking jobs and costing tax payers excessive amounts of money.

C.  Evidence:  $4 billion cost (p. 6/note card 3)

D.  Explain my evidence! (________________________)

E.  Tie-back to thesis:  Therefore, since illegal immigrants haven’t been judged unfairly, they also have clearly not been discriminated against.

First of all, illegal immigrants are in no way judged unfairly in Prop. 187.  The law states that illegal immigrants are causing economic and physical harm to Californians by taking jobs and costing tax payers excessive amounts of money.    "In a study conducted in 1994, then-governor of California Pete Wilson discovered that the cost of illegals to California, in unemployment, medical, educational and other services, was more than $4 billion annually" (Hayes).  Clearly, $4 billion dollars is A LOT of money, even for a whole state.   The reality is that all of that money is being taken out of legal citizens' pockets through their taxes.  That's like having a classmate borrow lunch money from you every single day!  The issue for Californian's is that there doesn't ever seem to be an IOU or a payback from all these "moochers."  Therefore, since illegal immigrants haven't been judged unfairly, they also have clearly not been discriminated against.
