Option #1

First work through the poem and identify lines with literary devices.  Then make literary device flashcards.  Write a line or two of the poem on one side of the card.  On the other side, write what sort of literary device(s) appear in the line(s).

Option #2

Review the facts about Stephen Vincent Benet’s life.  Then write a basic question about him on one side of a card.  On the other side, write the short answer.  (Example:  Q: Which U.S. President was Benet closely acquainted with?  A: Franklin Delano Roosevelt)

Option #3

Review background information and facts about “The Ballad of William Sycamore” (e.g., like themes, form, influences, storyline, etc.).  Then write a question about the poem on one side of a card.  On the other side, write the short answer.  (Example:  Q:  How does “The Ballad of William Sycamore” differ from the traditional ballad form?  A:  Benet uses extra syllables in some of his lines, so the rhythm is slightly different.)
